Mr. Francisco
Physical Education & Health
For February and March in Physical Education our students completed our hockey unit. Most classes played some hocky games, our middle school students completed our own version of an Olympic hockey tournament, complete with one class having a rematch between Canada and the USA for the gold medal.
In March, we started our basketball unit, with middle school classes having a class tournament of the shooting game KOBE. Statistics have been mixed into class as we cover how to calculate winning percentage and shooting percentage. Next up will be our in-class basketball league. Our younger students are taking steps toward making their first shots, while also spending plenty of time learning dribbling and passing.
In Health class, 8th grade students have been working through the Drug awareness unit, covering the dangers of some commonly used drugs and the addiction process. We also covered refusal strategies, and worked through the April 26 Choices magazine on the topics of resilience in the face of trauma, prescription stimulants, phone-free living, and when healthy eating goes too far. Next up for us is our Nutrition unit.
A little about me:
When I am not teaching I play recreational touch football almost year-round and in a kickball league part of the year. I also enjoy disc golf, park golf (ask me about it sometime!), and biking. One of my favorite things to do is cook, especially making some delicious game day recipes for Bills games.
Grading policy:
Physical Education: 80% daily effort, participation, conduct, 20% assessments
8th grade Health: 60% class work, 20% projects, 20% tests/quizzes
Philosophy: I believe all students should be provided with a variety of activities that allows them to explore several different ways to be physically active. The goal is to provide students with enjoyment, competition and motivation to want to be physically active through the remainder of their lives. Students will also learn about what it means to live a happy and healthy lifestyle.
